Our story starts in the Dutch city of Rotterdam where our mother, Maria, was born at a time when war was consuming Europe. In those very tough times Maria learned to sew to provide the basics for herself and her family. From there, Maria steadily gained experience and skill and a love for her craft. After the war, Maria came to Canada and at one point, Maria supported a family of six as a professional seamstress. Today at 84 years old with fingers still incredibly nimble, she is still actively employed as a seamstress. Prior to COVID 19, Maria was working nearly 40 hours per week making precision complex designs for challenging outdoor applications. She is working reduced hours now, but she is eager to get back to her more rigorous work schedule.
As Maria’s daughters, we grew up around sewing and learned to sew as children. We were surrounding by patterns, projects and sewing machines. We learned about the various kinds of stitches and how to make beautiful things. Through hours of time happily spent working on projects together, our mother passed to us the love for sewing and the joy of creativity expressing ourselves with fabric, needle and thread. Our passion for sewing has grown over the years and we too have become skilled. More than anything else we sew for the satisfaction it gives us to see an idea we have or picture we have drawn come into being.
The creative energy behind Merzay’s Bandz is Caroline and Marie. Caroline, working from Windsor, has followed Maria’s footsteps and today is a seamstress, but in her work Caroline is using advanced technology for designing, cutting and sewing that had not even been thought of when she learned to sew as a child. She manages of team of professional seamstresses, but still finds pleasure in making things herself with her own sewing machine. Marie, working from Toronto, teaches kindergarten as her profession, but spends many hours each week engaged in sewing activities. Caroline and Marie are sisters as well as strong and passionate collaborators in Merzay’s Bandz. When asked what makes Merzay’s Bandz special, Caroline and Marie like to say, “We bring a shared love for what we can create with our sewing and we use our passion to drive design, fabric and innovation for the products we make.”
Merzay’s Bandz was born from an idea that practical sewn products can be fun and fashionable as well as comfortable and easy to use. It started when we decided that we could make masks to help protect people from COVID 19 and we realized that so much of what was available was functional, but lacked any kind of style and could be uncomfortable. We found fabrics that we believe “pop” and allow people to express their style in a bigger way.
After the masks, we expanded to head bands which we had been making for ourselves for years. Even today, Marie sometimes wakes up early in the morning to make a head band to match her outfit for the day. The head bands offer comfort and style. Merzay’s Bandz gives you the ability to easily and quickly pull your hair back from your face and keep it pulled back for as long as you like. Our head bands are for the times when you are working out or just want to be casual such that you just want your hair away from your face. We think our head bands also provide the opportunity for a fresh new look that also works in the office or just out and about. Our bands come in different styles.
The name Merzay was given to Marie as child by her mother and is a fast, Dutch contraction of her first and middle names – Marie Josephina. More often than not, when Marie heard herself being called Merzay, she knew she had been caught by her mother in some sort of mischief and was being called to account for it. Today, recalling the name evokes a round of laughter from our mother - as well as from us – for the memories of the simplicity and joy of being a child.
